A Love Letter to Jourdan Lewis from a Spartan

Jourdan,

Hi there. I know this is kind of awkward, what with you being a Wolverine and me being a Spartan, but I really think we have something special. Or maybe it's just you.

I know that most of the national attention gets paid to your teammate Jabrill Peppers, who is a very talented player, winning accolades such as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, and earning a trip to New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist. But Jourdan, I know that accolades don't drive you. You're like me- you just want to win.

You know that as a cornerback, your primary job is to prevent opposing receivers from catching the ball. According to Pro Football Focus, you have been amongst the best in the country at doing that- #1 receivers playing against Michigan the past two seasons have only averaged 4.3 targets per game! That is AMAZING!

When opposing quarterbacks do make the mistake of throwing to you, you tend to do things like this:

How did you do that? What did they teach you at Cass Tech in Detroit that allows you to do things like that? I mean, Northwestern is a pretty good school (not necessarily at football, but I digress) and they couldn't figure it out, so what chance do I have?

You also have the habit of playing incredibly well when I am in attendance. During last year's game at home against the Spartans (which I will try to not bring up at our first date), you set a career high in pass breakups with 6, having a fantastic duel with Aaron Burbridge. In fact, I must say that is when you caught my attention. Then, this year, I kind of think you did this for me, even though I was mad at the time:

Jourdan Lewis intercepts a pass against the Spartans.

You just ran the route that RJ Shelton was running, only better. It's hard to see in this clip, but you started this play less than 20 yards from my seat in the student section, and I distinctly remember how aggressively you played it. Rather than a conventional press, you read where RJ was going from the beginning, and you kick-stepped inside, in anticipation of his deep route. This anticipation is what draws me to you, Jourdan. To be honest, I have never seen a college cornerback read-step and then win a race to a deep route. It reminds me of Patrick Peterson.

The NFL doesn't want you because you're undersized. Pardon my French, but that is bullshit. Playing cornerback is all about instincts and skill, and you have both in spades. The fact that you have to put up with all the Jabrill hype when I think you're a much better player (and better person, if the stories about him are to be believed) must wear on you, and I am sorry about that.

All I'm saying is that maybe after you finish your career next Friday in Miami against Florida State, probably by shutting down Travis Rudolph and intercepting Deondre Francois twice (that's a little bonus prediction), you'll be bored and maybe even a little lonely one night.

That's where I come in. I'm only an hour down I-96. I, too, am 5'10" on a good day. Let's hang out. I can take you to Conrad's, just don't do what Grant Perry did there. Or Draymond Green, for that matter. Then, we can watch game film together. Let me know.

Sincerely,

Chase Michaelson

P.S. I know this is going to embarrass you, but you didn't really think I was going to leave this out, did you?
